Phytochemistry

Phytochemistry is a branch of chemistry that studies phytochemicals. They are groups of chemicals present in plants. These phytochemicals have been linked to a variety of therapeutic characteristics, including anticancer, anti-plasmodial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant.

Ethnomedicine/Traditional Medicine

Traditional medicinal knowledge has made and still making a significant contribution to the development of contemporary medicines and therapies for treating communicable and non-communicable disorders.

However, in African Traditional Medicine and in particular, Nigerian ethnomedicine, the need for scientific validation in ethnopharmacology has yielded fantastic outcomes in herbal product development resulting in the growth of the herbal supplement market into a multibillion-dollar industry in many developed countries (including China, USA, Germany) excluding Africa; this is despite the rich tropical plant biodiversity as well as historically broad Traditional knowledge of African populations on the medicinal uses of plants.
